An embargo is a delay in online access to a journal (usually 3 - 18 months) imposed by the publisher for any of the following reasons:
- To preserve the value of the advertising in the paper version of the journal
- To charge premium prices for the newest content
- To charge subscription fees for the content before it becomes open access
