Utilizing the database fields in an advanced search improves your search results.

  • If you do not choose a specific field, the database reverts to a keyword search, where your words will be searched throughout the record.
    • Too many results - can be worse than finding only ten relevant results.
  • Limiting your search to the subject field is more efficient if you are looking for books about Gloria Steinem instead of by her.
  • If you are looking for books by Gloria Steinem instead of about her, it is more efficient to limit your search to the author field.

Two screenshots are provided to illustrate the drop-down features. Notice that the drop-down locations change depending on the database or catalog.
